“aquaponics” is simply a term coined from joining aquaculture or fish farming and hydroponics or the process of growing plants in liquid, gravel, or sand, without soil, but with added nutrients.. Aquaponics is an innovative method of farming which uses fish-waste as a natural fertilizer for plants in a nutrient-rich ecosystem. the plants and nitrifying bacteria remove ammonia and other nitrogenous compounds from the water, making it safe for fish to live in.. The following species of fish are common in australian aquaponics systems. name: jade perch (scortum barco) distribution : lake eyre and bulloo-bancannia catchments. temperature: 20 - 30°c (fish will not feed if temperature is below 15°c) ph: 6.5 - 8. hardness: 50 - 200ppm. diet: medium protein. growth: 10 - 12 months (500g).
